Made some improvements on the ~stop-tracing ID. The old one was weaksauce and our current webcam was drowning it out. =P

Man, this is a dark time for dA...and there are so many people I'd love to have this shoved down their throats. Still, it is very encouraging to know that there are people against tracing and other art violations. It's people like you that keep me on dA with a flicker of hope in my heart for the future.

Pun intended or not (Flicker = Flickr) but to be serious. This does not sit well with me and I've made that clear in journals and news response.

It's been great watching this site grow but flipside, it's terrible seeing da leave the roots and foundation that made the site what it is.

I was on hard-core technical site and some years back they changed the forums and so many users warned against that. I left and in the last 5 ? or so years have just popped in to see if it's gotten better.

No - it went from some real technical talk to a watered down generic site..a huge amount of the original users left.

Every move a site makes can be critical and time will prove what this and any upcoming decisions will do to either make the users love or hate the site.
:iconsilversugar:
Flickr? (Typo?) Sorry, I'm a little confused by what you are saying. Did I use an offensive phrase or something? It's just...I always took "a flicker of hope" meant that you felt that "it isn't all lost" or similar.

A-anyway... I agree it's sad when sites change like this. dA is the only Art hosting forum I've ever known...I feel safer here than with something like Photobucket--so I don't know what I'm going to do if it keeps getting worse.

Poor injection of humor on my part "that keep me on dA with a flicker of hope in my heart for the future." with Flickr .com [link] being a competitor.

There are many sites that depending on how serious a person wants to get into art, a few - GfxArtist [link] (great site) and I have to redo my gallery since the only drawback is on free account you have to host the image elsewhere. I had mine linked to my website and while cleaning my site (never really set it up anyhow - my website) deleted the directory that had my images for GfxArtist.

Then there is Behance Network [link] (great especially if you like to collaborate in projects) .. but those two are hard-core artistic based, which this site should be.

But deviantART has it's own flavor and in general is such a great site but with lack of critique or constructive critique (rare) and some of the recent changes especially the tracing policy. But the layout of DA makes it a very nice site yet so many areas that could benefit the artist that are lacking.

But in other words - there are many choices and really depends on your needs. Best get on few different sites anyhow, even it's just for comparison.

Sorry if the humor (or lack of) didn't make sense.......
:iconsilversugar:
Oh! I get it now. Sorry, I'd never heard of that site before.

I tend to be rather clueless about a lot of other things on the Internet since I really only have a collection of five sites (approximately) that I frequent.

I don't do a lot of random browsing--so I generally stick with my forum, dA, Wikipedia, a few online comics, and the occasional eBay listing.

I figure a lot of it has to do with me being on dial up and all, but yeah... I really wouldn't know about dA's competition. I joined this site because I like the other members here...everyone is usually really nice about giving constructive criticism and there are a lot of helpful tutorials and stocks...

The only problems I can see are members that are breaking the rules and dA not really doing anything to enforce them as they should...or rather as I imagine they should. It's a complex issue these days though which is why I don't usually voice my opinions--it's just as dangerous as a religious conversation.

dA is a great site but some of the decisions in policy irritate/frustrate me as they do others. But one problem - it is a great site..and the users ultimately make the site. Too many great people here and also the whole layout just works right.

It's actually very difficult for a site this large to be policed so the users that break the rules it's either ignore or if it's a flatout copyright violation, report it. They do handle those very quickly and probably do the best they can to enforce.

In general I don't get into the political aspect of site unless something happens that I really don't like, so I voiced my opinion for what it's worth.

But there are many gallery sites and they all offer something different but on the internet there so many places that I've actually gotten to the same point as you..Go to galleries, check email, a few tech forums and that's about it.

Having said all of the above - in some of my journals it might sound like I hate it here when it's the exact opposite. I still remember when this site came up but I didn't become a member since I was too busy to be involved. I guess it was lurking in the shadows and watching dA grow up but in the end and overall - it still ranks as one of my top sites and just hoping that future policy doesn't water down the site.

I almost wonder if the tracing policy didn't have a dual-side: it was being done anyhow and unenforceable and the second probably to get some more users in.

But it's not a bad idea to try some of the other sites since there so many, but I would ask other users opinions on how they like the sites before you put anything of value on them. My hope is that recent Facebook mistake and the users forcing back policy will make all sites look at what the users think first.
:iconsilversugar:
I love the people here so much, and that's the main reason I'm sticking through this mess. I'm really glad that users are able to report violations--I don't think they'd be able to handle this place otherwise. You know?

I think maybe it did have a second side also, but I'm not smart enough to figure things out like that on my own. Ha ha. Not that I'm usually the type to analyze things like that anyway. Either way, I hope that all of us non-tracers/thieves banding together can help persuade dA to change things for the better.

As for other sites...I really don't think any of them would ever be good enough. If things get worse around here I might just have to host my things independently--or not at all. It'd suck, but it would be better than risking my art getting mauled by monsters.

Oh and uh...what happened with Facebook/what is that site exactly? (I hear it mentioned all the time, but I haven't taken the time to see what it is.)
