Tracing is like piggy-back-riding a marathon. It may take some effort to hang on for the duration of the run, but you're ultimately riding on the hard work of the person carrying you across the finish line.

I just use pictures as references for poses... That's not tracing, is it? .__."

I just look at the picture. That's all. I don't put the paper on top or anything. I swear!

Well, I like this group. Tracing may be okay if you have the original artists permission and all, but there's a loooot of people who don't ask permission, don't give credit for where images and ideas came from and assume complete ownership. And that really ticks me off. It may be allowed by Deviantart's rules, but I don't think that makes it right.

I know someone who has been tracing!

A deviant named ~ponys-for-you has been tracing other peoples art.

For example:

Original Drawing: [link]

Her traced version: [link]

She even admitted to tracing it! [link]

She also traced this...

Original Art: [link]

Her traced version: [link]

She must be stopped!

FAN ART TOO!!!

COPYRIGHT IS COPYRIGHT!!

REMOVE ALL ANIME EXCEPT FOR 100% ORIGINAL CHARACTERS!!!

BAN ANYONE WHO POSTS "FAN ART"

FAN ART? MORE LIKE FAN THEFT. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH WORK YOU PUT IN, IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH OF YOUR OWN STYLE YOU PUT INTO IT, IT DOESNT MATTER IF YOU ADMIT THAT YOU DIDN'T CREATE THE CHARACTER, STEALING ANOTHER ARTIST'S CHARACTER IS ART THEFT!!!!!

Tracing is ok as long as you have permission. If you have permission then what is there to stop you.

Hi, I just came across this page and I'm not here to start an argument. Yes, it's completely fine to trace but posting it on deviantart is just as good as claiming that art as your own (even though, sorry to say, it may be another person's art). I am taking no sides and I repeat, am not here to start an argument, but just to kindly offer a suggestion. *Just to get this into people's head, it is good to trace, but it isn't wise to post the traced art for your account because it is as though you are claiming it as your own.* I am a fairly easygoing person so I think it would be fine to trace whatever you like, so long as it isn't tainting the Copyright Law. Peace.
